I have a gelding that tore his side and shoulder open on the end of a blunt pipe. The cut on his side was deep enough to expose his rib cage. The vet cleaned both the wounds, sewed what he could, and kept him at the clinic for large doses of antibiotics to prevent infection. After 10 days, he was stable enough for me to take him home. His shoulder is all the way healed with a small scar and his side is down to a small circular area that just needs to hair over.
